The Climáximo Environmentalists Trial

The trial focused on the actions of six Climáximo supporters who, in December 2023, blocked a private jet at Cascais airfield. They aimed to protest superfluous and luxury flights of the super-rich. It was done to highlight that the emissions from such activities are harmful.

The movement described the such matters weapons of mass destruction that contribute to global harm. A statement from the movement reads

Seven months ago, while governments and fossil fuel companies were meeting at COP28, to which they flew en masse by private jet for yet another round of false promises, Climáximo supporters entered the Cascais airfield, painted a private jet with red paint and blocked it with their bodies

Although the decision went against them, Climáximo remains more determined than ever. They stated that the ruling will not hinder their cause and that they will continue their fight despite such obstacles. Inês Teles, one of the convicted activists, expressed her disappointment in a statement. She said that:

Despite the court’s admission of the gravity of the climate crisis and the impact of disruptive protests, the people who took action to stop the destruction were convicted, while the real culprits remain unpunished.
