The Climáximo movement blocked a private jet at Cascais Aerodrome in 2023. The matter was brought to court and finally decision on the matter is now announced. The court has sentenced six environmentalists from the Climáximo movement. The decision came out on Monday 29 July 2024 after a long wait.
The culprits are sentenced to suspended sentence of 15 months in prison with 135 days of community service. Additionally, they will all have to pay a fine of 5,300.59 Euros. The Climáximo mocked the decision saying that the sentence was announced in the same month in which the temperature broke the world record twice in a row.
The Climáximo Environmentalists Trial
Seven months ago, while governments and fossil fuel companies were meeting at COP28, to which they flew en masse by private jet for yet another round of false promises, Climáximo supporters entered the Cascais airfield, painted a private jet with red paint and blocked it with their bodies
Although the decision went against them, Climáximo remains more determined than ever. They stated that the ruling will not hinder their cause and that they will continue their fight despite such obstacles. Inês Teles, one of the convicted activists, expressed her disappointment in a statement. She said that:
Despite the court’s admission of the gravity of the climate crisis and the impact of disruptive protests, the people who took action to stop the destruction were convicted, while the real culprits remain unpunished.
Recent Activities of Climáximo Movement
The Climáximo Movement have been active lately. The supporters of the movement rallied in support of the international uprising taking place at airports around the world. It demands an end to fossil fuels by 2030. Additionally, they joined the ongoing struggle in France against the privatization and exploitation of water resources by major corporations.
Climáximo emphasized that despite facing repression across Europe, protests are growing in intensity. They believe that this growing number underscores the importance of the matter. It also highlights the urgent need for immediate action from everyone to avert a climate catastrophe.
It looks like the Climáximo environmentalists suspended sentence will not stop the movement; in fact, it is likely to strengthen it.
