The Azores Regional Health Directorate has closed three thermal spas in São Miguel to the public. The notification of the closure of these Azores thermal spas was ordered on Friday. A Regional Health Directorate executive revealed the reason behind the closure. He said that laboratory tests revealed results compatible with microbiological contamination.

The Regional Health Directorate carried out an environmental investigation on São Miguel Island. They collected thermal waters in Caldeira Velha, Poça da Dona Beija, and Parque Terra Nostra. INSA (National Institute of Health) conducted the laboratory analysis of the samples. Doctor Ricardo Jorge was the lead in the investigation.

A note from Jorge read: “The results showed microbiological contamination. He also added that: “good public health practices dictate that if microbiological analysis reveals that water is unfit for its intended use, measures must be taken to ensure the safety of the public.”

The Azorean executive said that they followed the Precautionary Principle on the matter. He also revealed that they took several actions at the three affected sites. These include closing the sites and restricting public access to the tank areas. These measures are intended to ensure public safety.

Adding on, he said: “Additionally, a shock disinfection will be carried out. The tanks and accessories will be drained, cleaned, and disinfected. Control and risk assessment measures will also be reviewed.”

The Azorean Regional Government decided to conduct new tests after refilling the tanks. They said that the affected areas will stay closed until the risk assessment is satisfactory. These instructions were provided to the entities managing the spaces. Additionally, they guarantee that the stakeholders are collaborating actively and committedly.

The Azorean Regional Health Directorate will continue to monitor the situation. They will implement necessary measures to protect public health. Moreover, adequate surveillance will be ensured so that the spaces can be reopened safely in the future.
