More than 120 scientists and specialists in environmental, marine, and social sciences have written a letter to the Portuguese Government about marine life Portugal. Their main concern is the conservation of marine life which is endangered at the moment.

Students from the University of Porto have urged the Portuguese Government to give some importance to marine life. A letter regarding marine life has been written by the students from the University of Porto. More than 120 students of environmental, marine, and social sciences have signed off on the letter. These scientists and specialists demand the National Nature Restoration Plan not to ignore the sea. The letter stated:
It was in this context that a group of researchers from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Porto (CIIMAR-UP) mobilized the scientific community to send an open letter to the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Dr Maria da Graça Carvalho, to encourage the national restoration plan to pay attention to the sea and marine habitats.

Portugal is tasked with forming a plan on how to include environmental measures in their Nature restoration plan. The country is given two years to devise a plan on how they will implement the objectives of environmental sustainability. The Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) of Porto University released a statement on National Maritime Day. This statement announced that it had contacted the scientific community to write a letter to the Portuguese Minister of Environment and Energy.
The demand from these environmental specialists is that Maria da Graça Carvalho, Minister of Environment and Energy should pay more attention to marine life as well. This letter was signed by more than 120 environmental and marine experts. It was also signed by representatives of non-governmental organizations that are actively fighting for marine life.
97% Of Portugal Area Is Sea
It is reported that 97% of Portugal is sea which is home to various types of marine life. The letter stated:
The percentage of marine habitats in an unfavorable state of conservation in Portugal may be as high as 75%, according to the Biodiversity Information System for Europe, and may include seagrass meadows, macroalgae forests, sponge and coral gardens, and hydrothermal vents.
A Nature Restoration Act was made to preserve biodiversity within the European Union (EU) and it was also approved by the European Parliament as well. This Act was approved this year. The deadline for Portugal to repair all the endangered and damaged habitats by 2050 according to the European Parliament. The Parliament also wants Portugal to repair 20% of the land and maritime regions by the year 2030.
