Portugal Emphasizes Border Control

Any citizen entering the country from the Schengen area will be checked thoroughly before getting permission. These checks will have a proper biometric system that will identify each person through the system. Every citizen will also get a background check through the database, including a personal data check. The Minister of Presidency has set this implementation. He has deemed this check as a ‘fundamental element’ for regulation.

A press conference of the Council of Ministers took place where this measure was discussed in detail. António Leitão Amaro has informed about this decision to the media. It is also included in the draft law for border control. This is also approved by the Government which will send it to the Assembly of the Republic. The Minister has conveyed very clearly that every person will go through biometric verification for safety reasons. He stated:

We are regulating a new system for controlling exits and entries into the national territory via external borders. This is a fundamental element in order to have the appropriate information for inspection and to ensure the regularity of entry into Portugal.

More Technology And Machinery Is Invested

António has informed the media that this system will have much more technological machinery which will make this process very smooth. The Government is willing to invest in equipment, machines, and people. This whole exercise aims to make the process effective. It will make the entry and exit situation in the country much better and more organized. This will ensure that everything is monitored around the Schengen area.

Immigration has always been supported by the Government of Portugal. The only humane way to control this is to process it effectively. The Government wants to regulate the arrival of people at the border and check their identification. This is why there is a bill approved by the Government which will now be submitted to the parliament. It will be presented in the parliament soon. This will be discussed and accessed by all the officials.

The Portuguese Government has decided to impose quotas and restrict some access to residences. The government has allowed foreigners to arrive in the country with work visas only. Those people who are looking for employment can apply for the work visas. As a result, foreign nationals in Portugal who have tourist visas are no longer able to regularize their status. People can use an existing solution that was previously acquired through the Portuguese consular network in their own place of origin, they will require an employment contract.
