This task of preserving and conserving can only be achieved if the city hall forms a technical team within the city hall. This team will work internally, and it will generate plans and ideas for this project.
Environmental & Archaeological Park
The Mayor of Vila do Bispo, Rute Silva, has stated that the City Council has bought land which extends to land by sea. This includes areas like Pombaline buildings, marsh, Roman ruins, and huge biodiversity in Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina National Park. The main reason for buying this land is to convert it into an “environmental and archaeological park” in this area. This park will be managed by the city hall of Vila do Bispo. Rute Silva stated:
My current intention is to create an environmental reserve there and try to develop projects so that the Roman villa can be seen and made visitable. But also, to create routes so that people can sustainably use that, with load limits.
Rute Silva has expressed his opinion about creating a small natural reserve in the region. This will also feature an archaeological heritage-like facility within the park. The mayor stated that she needed the construction to stop in the region, which is why the City Hall decided to buy the land. If any other company decides to buy the land and start construction, the heritage of the area will be destroyed.
The mayor of Vila do Bispo’s only intention to buy the land is to safeguard the area. According to some reports, several companies were looking to buy the land and construct some residential or commercial buildings in the area.
Algarve Buy Estate To Prevent Construction
City Council of Vila do Bispo is deciding whether to use the Environmental Fund for the investment of Herdade da Boca do Rio. The council is thinking of paying from the environmental fund that will be used to pay millions of Euros for the property. However, in case this is not possible due to the payment that has already been made, she believes that:
At least they will have to help us with the investments that will need to be made, to preserve the Roman villa and the Pombaline warehouses that are nearby, to defend this heritage archaeological analysis of the advance of the sea, to create routes and preserve environmental heritage.
City Council Will Preserve Land
The purchased land is considered as an area which is rich in biodiversity. It has features like fauna and flora along with some other species that are important for the habitat. The lower area of the estate has 3 streams including Vale de Boi, Vale Barão, and Budens. These 3 streams combine before it flow in the Boca do Rio. This area usually provides a habitat for sea otters. Vila do Bispo City Council knows about all these species which reside in the area. That is why they want to preserve this area to protect the habitat.
Just adjacent to the Boca do Rio beach, the calm waters of the open sea stretch 138 meters wide. This attracts both the residents and the tourists as well. Boca do Rio also contains several important archaeological remains that even include the Lusitano-Roman villa which dates back to the 1st and 5th centuries AD. This area also contains several other important archaeological sites.
Algarve municipality has focused on preserving the area since 2003. The area near the sea serves as an important historic site which was considered the peak location many years ago. This is the main reason why Vila do Bispo City Council has bought the land to prevent any construction in the area.
