The Sacred Peyote: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide

When they find the peyote peyote they consume it overnight while performing religious ceremonies and dances. Any extra peyote was usually sold or traded to the Cora and Tarahumara. The experience will gradually become more intense until you reach a peak. While this stage can sometimes feel never-ending, trust that it will pass – that’s why it’s called a peak! And if you need some support or reassurance, make sure to ask your facilitator. After the four-hour mark, the peak will have passed, and it will slowly decrease in intensity over the next hours.

There is some evidence that peyote alkaloids help the body release progesterone. Research also indicates that the mescaline in peyote interacts with the body’s serotonin receptors, particularly 5HT2A. During the Huichol pilgrimage peyote is ingested fresh, after its harvest in a communal ritual after the pilgrimage. In modern Native American Church ceremonies users pulverize the peyote or infuse the buttons in water, and then consume the peyote during all-night ceremonies.

Many people in our group shared how concerned they were about the environment and how much they marijuana addiction felt the pain of the earth.
