The new tax will be imposed on any tourist who decides to stay even a night in Portugal. The tax is imposed to generate revenue which can be used by the country on other government projects.
Tourist Tax being imposed
Most of you might not know what a tourist tax is so it is imposed on people who come to visit other countries. This tax is applied by some cities or countries when on people who decide to stay for a short time. It is usually a short amount, some dollars or Euros per night and it adds up to how many nights you stay. Sometimes these taxes are also applied in the daytime but very few cities have daytime tourist taxes. The tax is taken by the local hotels on behalf of the government and the tax price is always billed separately, it is not included in the price.
A tax of 1 Euro has been decided by the authorities to be charged for any foreigner who stays a night. If he decides to stay more than a night, the number of days will be counted, and tax will be imposed accordingly. The aim of collecting tax is to raise around 200,000 Euros in a single year.
This initiative was taken by Oeiras and the authorities have stated that this decision was taken because the tourist tax is implemented in other municipalities. Therefore, Oeiras has now decided to impose the tax as well. The tax will be imposed by the Act of Regulation of Administrative Permissions, Taxes, and Other Revenues which is also known as RAPTOR. This regulation was published in the Gazette after getting approval from the municipal assembly.
Where will the tax be applied?
The tax will be applied in Oeiras which is located within the Portuguese city, of Lisbon. The tax is implemented on hotels and other local accommodations if a foreigner plans to stay overnight. It was intended to apply the tax for the preservation of traditional business and the establishment of centers for culture and recreation. The following statement was given by the council when asked about the purpose of the tax:
Ensure a counterpart for the enjoyment of a set of activities and investments promoted by the municipality of Oeiras, related to tourism.
