Romanian sculptor Virgil Scripcariu will exhibit his work for the first time in Portugal at the Batalha Monastery. The exhibition is titled Triunfo (Triumph); it will feature six sculptures and two installations. The exhibition is set to open next Sunday 1st September 2024.

Exhibition Details and Inspiration
Joaquim Ruivo the director of the monument told the media that the exhibition was the result of contact with another Romanian artist who has already shown work at the monastery, Mircea Roman. According to Joaquim Ruivo, Virgil Scripcariu was enchanted by the monastery. He stated:
I also saw his public work through various sources, along with his personal work and the prestige he has earned.
He further said that the exhibition has exceptional quality, will occupy various spaces in the monastery, and will give it an important artistic ambiance.
The director of that national monument said that one of the pieces that Virgil Scripcariu will present was “created exclusively inspired by the monastery”, in front of which it will be on display, and that “it sets the tone for the exhibition, which is called ‘Triumph’, it is the triumph of good over evil, of light over darkness”.

Exhibition Spaces and Themes
The official clarified that, in addition to the exterior, the pieces can also be seen in the Royal Cloister and the Afonso V Cloister. He explained that a path that, in some way, follows the route taken by tourists when they enter and leave the monastery.
Virgil Scripcariu explained to the media that Mircea Roman had previously exhibited at the monument, and when he saw the images of that exhibition, he was very impressed. Virgil said:
After a few years, he recommended me to Mr. Joaquim Ruivo, I came here in the spring and he suggested that I do an exhibition here and I am very happy.
The exhibition will have six bronze sculptures and two installations, one of which features large ceramic pieces described as a manifesto against war.
Regarding the theme of the exhibition, the sculptor explained that when he visited this World Heritage monument he had a strong feeling about good and evil and their impact on all human history. This is what inspired him for the creation of the exhibition.
