A man was rescued by the operations carried out by the Portuguese Navy after he was trapped 300 meters at the Algarve Rock. The rescue operation started when he got trapped at the top of the Leixão da Gaivota rock. This rock is located in Lagoa, Algarve.
A 31-year-old man was rescued by the Portuguese Navy
The 31-year-old man got trapped at the top of the rock. Rescue operations started as soon as the reports were received. The captain of the Port Portimão aided in the rescue operations, and he sent resources for the operation.
The Leixão da Gaivota rocks are isolated from the main residential area and there is no land connection with the rocks. People do climb the rock, but a rescue operation had to be performed when a man was not able to climb down from the rocks. The captain of the port sent his team but due to the 300-meter height of the rock, the boats could not help. The National Maritime Authority has stated that the presence of both the Ferragudo lifeguard and the Lagoa firefighters could not help due to the greater height.

Portuguese Airforce came to the rescue where they had to use an EH-101 Merlin helicopter for the rescue operation. The complete operation was conducted by the captain of the port. The trapped man was rescued at around 9 pm and he was taken to Portimão Aerodrome after the rescue mission was successful.
The operation was successful due to the involvement of rescue boats and firefighters who ensured the safety of the man. The Portuguese Navy commented after the incident, claiming that they would lead any mission which is in their vicinity. It took some time for the operation to be successful but all safety measures were taken before they proceeded on the Leixão da Gaivota rock. The Portuguese Navy stated:
After receiving the alert, and in coordination with the captain of the Port of Portimão, various rescue resources were used by the Shipwrecked Aid Institute and the Lagoa Fire Department.
They further added that it was tough to use the local boats, and a helicopter had to be involved in the rescue operation as man rescued 300m Algarve rocks. The following statement was released:
Due to the difficulty in accessing the site, as it is a 30-meter-high rock, it was necessary to engage the Portuguese Air Force helicopter, EH-101, which rescued the individual at around 9 pm and transported him safely to Portimão Aerodrome.
The Portuguese Navy is ready to perform such rescue operations, and the commander of the Naval force ensures the public about any kind of risk operations that need to be performed. The safety of the public is of utmost paramount, and it needs to be kept a priority.
On the other hand, the public is also advised to keep their safety first at every instance. The rescue teams are around the corner but just in case, it is advised to the public to take precautions when going on a hike or when climbing any mountains or rocks.
