The 31-year-old man got trapped at the top of the rock. Rescue operations started as soon as the reports were received. The captain of the Port Portimão aided in the rescue operations, and he sent resources for the operation.

The Leixão da Gaivota rocks are isolated from the main residential area and there is no land connection with the rocks. People do climb the rock, but a rescue operation had to be performed when a man was not able to climb down from the rocks. The captain of the port sent his team but due to the 300-meter height of the rock, the boats could not help. The National Maritime Authority has stated that the presence of both the Ferragudo lifeguard and the Lagoa firefighters could not help due to the greater height.
