Groundforce, a handling company in Portugal is facing a risk of a strike from the workers. Groundforce workers announce strike to demonstrate protest against low wages. Workers have announced that they will strike against the company on 31st August and 1st September.

Workers Announce Strike At The End Of The Month

The Portuguese transport union workers have announced a strike. This strike will cover all the national airports, and it will affect the people who are traveling. The timing of the strike will be from 00:00 hours on August 31 to midnight on 1st September.

The main purpose of the strike is the low salary given to the workers at the airport. Workers receive a salary even lower than the normal base salaries allowed in the country. Another main point of this protest is the overtime of the workers. Some of the workers are told to work overtime without being paid.

Workers Union has decided that the only way to go forward is by protesting for their rights. Union has also stated the continuous changes to working hours which is not acceptable. The voluntary redundancy plan is also not working quite well for the workers.

The transport union of the Portuguese workers, Sttamp has finally spoken about the strike. It states that if the company bears any loss, the workers are made to work more. Also, for any company loss, the workers are given less salary. This is not how the Union wants its workers to operate at the airport. The statement of Sttamp is as follows:

Workers will ensure the services necessary for the safety and maintenance of equipment and facilities. The provision of the minimum services essential to meet essential social needs”.

Sttamp knows that the airport is a crucial way of transport. It cannot operate without its workers. For the time being, workers will carry out work minimum amount of work as instructed by Sttamp. This means that the airport will only perform basic operations. The Union wants their workers to perform simple operations like:

Performing flights necessary to meet critical problems relating to the safety of people and property, including ambulance flights, and emergency flights.

The job for workers will also include government and military flights. They will ensure that the country can run its planes on the islands of Portugal as well. The Union believes that for the Azores, the first-ever landing and take-off between the mainland and the island must be ensured. The workers of the Union will also ensure the first-ever landing and takeoff in Madeira as well.

The flights scheduled between Funchal and Porto Santo islands must be ensured by the workers as well. Menzies Aviation has revealed that in June, it had successfully acquired 50.1% of Groundforce Portugal. This was made after a year when they announced the agreement for new shareholders in March of 2023.
