PS Leader Accuses Government of Failing the National Health Service

This Thursday, the PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos accused the Government of incompetence. He said that it’s the inability of the government that is affecting the National Health Service, such as the closure of emergency rooms in several areas of the country.

The PS leader visited the Medieval Fair in Silves, Faro, and criticized the government while speaking to journalists. He mentioned Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s recent announcement of two new Medicine courses in Évora and Vila Real. He believes that this measure, made during the Festa do Pontal, won’t have an impact for about ten years.

Pedro Nuno Santos Questions Prime Minister On Failing the National Health Service

Pedro Nuno Santos said that:

Yesterday [Wednesday], once again, it did not seem like a prime minister’s speech, but rather that of a parliamentary leader. In fact, I believe that Luís Montenegro still hasn’t shed that role, and I doubt he will ever be able to adjust to the position of a prime minister, who has the ability to recognize what is not going well and what are his own failings, and at the same time present a vision to solve the problems—something we didn’t have,

He was ironic about the prime minister’s remarks on the difficulties in solving problems in healthcare. The Secretary-General said that the Government and Luís Montenegro have now discovered that it is not easy to solve the problems of the National Health Service.

He said that after having created expectations during the election campaign and trying to pass the idea that it was only due to ideological prejudice that the problems in healthcare were not solved by the PS. He added:

And that’s why they promised an emergency program that would be quickly approved, with dozens of urgent measures to solve pressing issues. Contrary to what the Prime Minister said, the problems are not less than they were a year ago—they are greater.

Pedro said that today there are more emergency rooms closed and with constraints. This demonstrates the failure of this policy of the Government. He argued that.

There’s no point in talking about how they had eight years and now they’ve only been around for four months, because they created expectations among the Portuguese, obviously to win elections, that they would be able to solve them. And the problems today are worse than they were a year ago, due to the exclusive responsibility of the Government,

The PS secretary-general stated that the Government failed and was incompetent in managing the NHS during the summer season. He cited the district of Setúbal as an example, noting that, it had never before experienced a day with all obstetrics and gynecology services closed. For the first time, there were several days without any of these services open.

He said that before Luís Montenegro‘s speech at the PSD’s rentrée party in Pontal, people expected to hear about measures to solve health problems. However, the proposals for adding two more medical courses will only have an impact in 10 to 15 years. He said:

This is the result of the Government’s incompetence, and there is no way to hide it.
