The rehabilitation of the runway for Porto airport will begin immediately. The work was initially started at the end of the month in July. It has been carefully planned by the airport authorities. The planning is done in such a manner that there will be minimal disturbances for the airport staff and passengers. The work occurs daily from Monday to Saturday and the time for work is between midnight to 6 am. This plan is made to minimize the effects caused to the airport operations. The work will be carried out this way for 19 months.

This information and planning were released to the press by Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) when they signed the contract with Aciona in May. ANA has already stated that the airport will reopen on the 11th of September at 6 am after all the rehabilitation is done. The plan is made to complete the remaining work. It has been conveyed by ANA that the reinforcement work for the structural part will be completed by February in the year 2026. ANA has also stated about the time of the work:

The remaining interventions will be carried out between 00:00 and 06:00, from Monday to Saturday.

50 Million Invested For Rehabilitation Works

The rehabilitation plan has been finalized by the government of Portugal. It has invested 50 million Euros in this operation. This operation aims to improve the operational conditions for Porto Airport. The Porto Airport is considered the biggest intervention that is being carried out on the runway. This also includes the nearby area of the runway that will be completely repaved. This re-pavement is done to the worn layer of the runway 17-35. The conditions of the pavement layer have been quite bad. It is essential to repave the layer for the efficiency of airport operations.

It has also been decided that the interventions for the reinforcement of the runway structure will be made. The area that is near the strip and the approaching line of runways 17 and 35 also needs some attention. Some of the LEDs will be replaced to enhance the lighting systems of the runway. It also includes the renovation of the drainage system for the runway. The installation of civil infrastructure will also be made in time to make the airport function smoothly. This will further improve the navigation system (ILS category II) on runway 35. It is essential to make this runway better because this feature will allow to operate with even low visibility.

The President of ANA also commented on the overall progress of the mission. He said that the planning for this renovation had been done very carefully and the dates were chosen after lots of practical work. He stated:

This date was chosen based on the probability of favorable weather conditions. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the conditions will actually be favorable for the works to be carried out.
