Today IPMA has issued a yellow weather warning for four districts. The showers may become heavy particularly in inland areas. The warning means heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in these regions. The warning is in effect from 12 pm to 9 pm. People in these areas should be careful especially in the eastern parts of the districts.

The IPMA predicts rain showers across central and southern Portugal which include these districts Évora, Castelo Branco, Beja, and Portalegre.  Rain can fall suddenly and might be accompanied by thunderstorms which bring risks like flash flooding and travel delays. The weather may change quickly so calm periods might suddenly shift to heavy downpours and create challenging conditions.

There will be increased wind in some regions along with rain and thunderstorms. Winds will be mostly weak to moderate and blowing from the east or northeast. However, the winds may be stronger in highland areas. This can make driving in mountainous areas more difficult during rain showers. The wind might also lower visibility and make it important for drivers to stay cautious.

These weather patterns are common in autumn in Portugal. Rain, thunderstorms, and some warm spells are typical for this season in the central and southern parts. While locals are used to such changes, it is still wise to take extra care today.

Temperatures Rise

Temperatures are expected to stay mild to warm. The lowest temperatures will be around 7°C in Guarda which is a mountain region in the northeast. In Lisbon and Faro along the coast, temperatures will be warmer and can reach around 15°C.

The highest temperatures will be from 17°C in Guarda to 26°C in Braga which will give parts of Portugal a warm feel even with the rain. This range of temperatures may also lead to high humidity which can make the air feel heavy with rain.

The current warning is part of a recent pattern of alerts from IPMA. In recent weeks, there have been other warnings due to changing autumn weather. The landscape in Portugal is diverse and different areas respond differently to heavy rain.

In some parts, soil can become saturated quickly and can increase the risks of landslides or small floods. Rural roads can become slippery or covered with rain runoff which will make it hard for drivers who may not expect such wet conditions.

Safety Precautions

Drivers are recommended to reduce speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles to stay safe during heavy rain. People should avoid low areas where water can collect. It is wise to stay in your houses during thunderstorms because of lightning risk.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain warning is a reminder of the need to stay prepared and alert. Rain showers may pass quickly but the effects of sudden downpours can last much longer. For farmers, rain is both helpful and challenging.

While it provides water for crops too much rain at once can harm fields. Businesses that depend on tourism or outdoor activities will need to adjust their plans for the day.

The IPMA is closely monitoring the weather and will provide updates if anything changes. Staying informed will help locals and visitors make safe choices about travel and outdoor activities. More days like this are expected in the coming weeks as autumn continues.

By taking simple precautions and staying aware of the risks, people in Portugal can safely handle these seasonal challenges brought on by autumn’s rain and storms.
