There is no doubt that drought has caused Portugal a lot of problems. It is the responsibility of the government to handle this issue. That is why the investment of €5.2 million is being done in Algarve. The Águas do Algarve company will be responsible for this project in Algarve. The finances for this type of project are made from the Government’s Environmental fund.
It is announced that the Ministry of Environment and Energy will invest around 4 million euros for a new groundwater intake construction. This fund will also focus on the public intakes that are already installed. The maintenance of such intakes will be done timely to ensure a smooth flow of water supply within Algarve.
Projects And Their Deadlines
The government has also announced that it will invest around 700 thousand Euros on temporary reinforcements teams. These teams will ensure the proper flow of water system and also maintain quality of it. The reinforcement team will have full control to enhance the strategic catchments within the region. This will provide a temporary solution to water problems in Algarve.
The remaining half a million Euros will be spent on the rehabilitation of sewage system for Castra Marim. This is a necessary action because it will reduce the undue inflows of the system. It will also improve the efficiency of the water system. The main solution should be the smooth flow of water, and this tackles the water problem in every aspect.
Maria da Graça Carvalho from the ministry of Environment and Energy has stated that the deadlines for all these projects are defined beforehand. It is the responsibility of the government to meet these deadlines on time. Maria has given her surety that these projects will be completed on time. The first phase has a deadline in December of this year. The second phase of the project will have the deadline in March of 2025. It is aimed to complete the whole project in December of 2025.
Algarve has been one of the regions that is effected a lot by the drought. Although, the projects that are started will hopefully resolve the water supply issues but in future, the government needs to plan their projects beforehand. Citizens of Algarve are delighted to hear that the government has taken some action for drought related issues.
