In Washington, Chega leader André Ventura shared his views with the Portuguese press where he attended Trump’s inauguration ceremonies.

He stated:

Safe countries have strong borders. The right is consistent in this: there are rules in Portugal and everywhere in the world. Anyone who does not comply with the rules must be returned to their country of origin5

He added that his position is not about targeting specific groups but about upholding the law universally.

Strong Borders And Legal Entry

Ventura emphasized the importance of maintaining strong borders and ensuring that immigrants follow the law. He compared the situation in the United States to Europe and stated that rules should be enforced consistently. He said that countries must protect their sovereignty by make sure that only legal immigrants reside within their borders.

Ventura said:

What we defend is that – also in Portugal – those who do not comply with the rules must be returned to their country of origin. And note that this is not only said by the president of Chega or the president of Vox. It is now said by the President of The United States, a country that is a reference for freedom and for human rights

He noted that strong borders are essential for national security and social stability. He also ensures that resources are directed toward those who contribute positively to society.

Donald Trump promised to carry out the largest deportation in US history during his campaign. His plans included expelling millions of illegal immigrants and tightening border controls. Ventura believes these measures are necessary to restore public confidence in immigration systems.

Equal Rules For All

Ventura was clear when asked if these rules should apply to Portuguese citizens living illegally in the United States.

He said:

We have also said in Europe that we need those who are not legal to return to their country. (…) I think what Donald Trump said was that people who come to the United States have to be legal. And I think that’s the right message

Ventura expressed confidence that most Portuguese people follow the law.

He added:

Everyone. What I demand for others is what I demand for myself as a Portuguese person. The Portuguese must comply with the law. I am convinced that this will not happen because the Portuguese people I have met all over the world comply with the rules. (…) What I am convinced of is that the Portuguese will not be a significant number

He stressed that consistency in applying immigration rules helps build trust in legal systems and prevents accusations of favoritism or double standards.

Setting An Example

Ventura highlighted the need for Portuguese immigrants to set an example. He argued that if Portugal expects immigrants within its borders to follow the law then Portuguese people abroad must do the same.

Ventura stressed:

However, when I say that immigrants in Portugal have to follow rules, everyone has to follow rules. I cannot say that I want one rule for Pakistanis, Indians, Brazilians, and Angolans and not for the Portuguese. The Portuguese have to be the ones first to set an example. When going to the USA, Canada, Switzerland, they have to follow the rule

He also pointed out that following the law abroad positively reflects Portugal reputation and fosters goodwill with other nations.

Preparing For Deportations

The Azorean Government is taking steps to prepare for possible deportations. Many Portuguese emigrants in the U.S. come from the Azores and the regional government is concerned about the impact of Trump policies. The Regional Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities Paulo Estêvão mentioned that they are preparing a contingency plan.

Estêvão said:

It is not the most likely scenario, but we are preparing for the worst.

He estimates that hundreds of Azorean emigrants could face deportation. The plan includes providing support for those returning such as housing assistance and job placement programs to help them reintegrate into their home communities.

Political Reactions In Portugal

The Socialist Party (PS) has requested a parliamentary hearing with the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities. The party wants to address the concerns of Portuguese communities in the United States who are reportedly anxious about Trump deportation plans.

The PS described the situation as urgent in its request. It noted that many Portuguese families are living in uncertainty because of potential deportations. The party also called for diplomatic efforts to ensure that the rights of Portuguese emigrants are protected and that their contributions to American society are recognized.

Ventura Criticizes Socialist Party

Ventura criticized the Socialist Party for its stance on immigration. He accused them of hypocrisy and pointed out issues with Portugal’s own immigration policies.

Ventura said:

The PS is the most shameless party we have in Portugal. There are security issues and the PS says that it was the one that gave the country security conditions when it left the country in the worst state of insecurity in our memory

He also criticized the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party Pedro Nuno Santos for failing to improve immigration policies during his tenure.

He said:

And now, a Party that left half a million immigrants unregistered in Portugal, comes to make a moral judgement about immigrants who are in other parts of the world. What the PS should do is apologize for having led the country into immigration chaos. The PS and Pedro Nuno Santos have no moral authority to talk about immigration

Ventura argued that the PS approach to immigration has led to significant challenges in public services and community integration.

This issue highlights a broader debate about immigration policies in both Portugal and the United States. While some argue for stricter enforcement, others believe in more compassionate approaches.

Ventura comments reflect a growing trend among right-wing leaders who advocate for tougher immigration laws. His support for Trump policies aligns with his party platform which emphasizes national sovereignty and strict border control. He believes that firm policies deter illegal immigration and promote respect for the law.

However, critics argue that mass deportations can lead to humanitarian crises. They point out that many immigrants which includes Portuguese have built lives in their host countries. Deportation could disrupt families and communities and create long-term social and economic challenges.
