Workers Will Go On Strike from Next Month

It has been decided by the union of the workers that strike is the only way ahead. The representative of the union gave their demands to the management of the company, Carris. There was no such positive response from the management which led to the decision for strike in Lisbon.

The main issue was the salary of the company workers. There was a meeting scheduled between the union and the management of the company. The meeting ended with no positive response from the management about the salary of workers. The union also demanded to have a 35-hour work week for all the workers. Manuel Leal who is the leader of Portuguese Union of Road and Urban Transport workers (STRUP) stated:

The meeting ended without a positive response to the issues of salary updates and the move to a 35-hour work week.

Manuel Leal also talked to the management of the Carris company. There was no outcome which benefited the workers of the company. He further stated that a union meeting was held with all the workers. A notice for the strike was submitted for 18th September. This date for the protest is decided after discussing with the workers.

This strike will affect the company and the overall transport of the city. Union has decided that the strike will last for 24 hours. This strike will cover all the sectors of the transport company. It is important for the company to either resolve this issue or face consequences. This may lead to the loss of the company’s profit as their workers will not work for 24 hours.

Demand Of Carris Workers

The workers of the Carris transport company are demanding a 100 euro pay rise in their salary. They also want their work week to be 35 hours long. This time of 35 hours must include the travel time of the workers. Another demand from the union is for the food allowances for the workers. Their demand can be summarized below:

  • Increase pays of workers by 100 Euros per worker
  • The work hour week for each worker must be 35 hours per week
  • Food allowance should be given to the workers.

The company met almost half of the demand from the union workers. They agreed to increase the pay by 60 Euros. The union is still adamant on the 100 euros. Now, their demand is to increase the further 40 Euros for each worker. The Carris workers have also gone on strike back in July. That strike was to increase the working conditions of the workers of the company. Their demand was to make better living and working arrangements for all the union staff. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved soon before the workers or the company faces much trouble.
