This work was granted when the public tender was submitted to Consórcio Marques, SA. This along with Tecnovia – Açores, Sociedade de Empreiteiros AS will be able to make a connection with the northern slopes of the island of São Miguel and the southern slopes of the island. This work has been considered as an extreme importance to the government of Azore. This is due to the much larger dimensions of the project.
The main reason for this project is to tackle the issue of floods which effect several areas of the municipality of Ponta Delgada. These floods also effected the same area last year, so the government is looking for modifications. The regional Secretary for tourism, mobility and infrastructure for the Azores, Berta Cabral stated:
[It] seeks to mitigate floods such as those that hit several parishes in the municipality of Ponta Delgada last year.
Connecting Northern And Southern Slopes Through Bypass
The construction of Capelas Bypass will connect the Northern and Southern slopes of the island of São Miguel. This will connect the main population centers that are located inside the city of Ponta Delgada and the northwest side of the municipality. This is where the main hub of transportation lies in the city. It has the location of airport and port.
New route will be starting from the area of Estrada Regional from the parish of Santo António. This will extinguish the region of Cerrado da Cova. A newly constructed roundabout will further link this region to an already existing road which is Estrada 4-1 and EM 510. The social democrat who is currently leading the Azorean coalition, José Manuel Bolieiro believes that this construction of Bypass will give further mobility. This will ease the way of transportation between the two areas. José Manuel has stated:
This connection provides greater mobility and ease of access to specialized services that are only available in the island’s large urban centers.
The route will allow the access to the São Miguel islands which will have much easier route with the construction of this Bypass. It will increase the feasibility of the area and will help the local citizens to travel with much ease as compared to before. This project is expected to solve the flood issues as well which previously effected some areas including the municipality of Ponta Delgada.
