The Socialist Party (PS) is preparing for Portugal’s next presidential elections and presidential candidate. Pedro Nuno Santos who is the party Secretary General says unity is important. He believes PS should support one candidate instead of splitting votes. However, the party will wait for candidates to announce their interest before making a decision.

Santos spoke after a PS National Commission meeting in Setúbal. He described the meeting as peaceful and participatory. He rejected claims that the party lacked direction.

Santos said:

Above all, a united party emerges, aware that it must be as united as possible in supporting a candidate

He explained that since no one has officially declared their candidacy, there is no need to rush. The party is taking a strategic approach and will carefully analyze all possible candidates before making a final choice.

Importance Of Party Unity

Santos says PS must stay united in the upcoming elections. The party cannot force anyone to run or withdraw. But he believes that having one candidate from PS would be best.

A united party would be stronger and avoid conflicts. Internal divisions could weaken the party’s influence which makes it harder to secure a victory in the election.

Santos said:

The idea also emerges that we need a President of the Republic who shares the worldview and values of the Socialist Party. This is fundamental to us. Someone who has competence, a political and professional background and has a vision of the world and the ability to represent Portugal in the world to the extent that our country has accustomed us to

He explained that PS wants a leader who can serve with dignity. The candidate must be respected both in Portugal and internationally. A well-respected leader will be better equipped to navigate complex political situations and uphold the country’s reputation.

Possible Candidates For The Socialist Party

There are a few names mentioned as possible PS candidates. Among them are António José Seguro and António Vitorino. Santos agrees that both have the needed experience and qualities.

Each of these figures has contributed significantly to the party in the past, earning the trust of many members and supporters.

He said:

Now we have to wait until someone clearly expresses their will. Only then can we decide

He added that the final decision will be made by the PS National Committee. This means the party will consult with its leadership before announcing its official stance. The process is expected to be thorough and inclusive which ensures a fair decision.

Waiting For Candidates To Announce Intentions

At this point, there is no set date for the decision. Santos says PS will wait until candidates make their intentions clear before deciding whom to support. The party does not want to rush into endorsing a candidate without understanding their vision and commitment to the role.

He said:

The party does not control who decides to run. We must wait until they declare their will. Whether it is done in public or private, we will listen. Only then can we decide

Santos says PS wants to make the right choice. Rushing into a decision may cause problems. He reassured party members that their opinions will matter when the time comes.

The party aims to maintain transparency throughout the process and allow members to feel included in the decision making.

Road To The Presidential Elections

The next presidential election in Portugal is approaching. Political parties are getting ready. PS wants to choose its candidate carefully.

Santos says waiting for candidates to announce their plans will help the party make a better decision. The election is crucial for the country’s future, and the party wants to ensure its candidate is the best fit for the role.

People are paying attention to see who will step forward. Will Seguro or Vitorino run? Will another strong candidate emerge? These questions remain unanswered. But one thing is clear: PS wants to be united when it chooses a candidate.

For now, the party is waiting. It wants to make a careful and smart choice. The next few months will be important. The decision PS makes could shape its future role in the election.

The outcome of the election will not only determine the next president but also influence the party’s standing in national politics. A well-prepared campaign will be key to securing success.
