Portugal’s dream of hosting a Formula 1 race remains unfulfilled. The country has a great track in Portimão and many fans who love motorsport. But the busy Formula 1 calendar has no space for Portugal right now. The president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Muhammad Ben Sulayem confirmed this during an interview with Portugal Lusa news agency.

The Algarve International Circuit which is also called the Portimão racetrack has hosted two Formula 1 races. These events showed the circuit’s potential. Many praised the organization, the scenic location, and the exciting track layout. But Portugal slot has been taken now because other famous circuits are back.

Ben Sulayem had kind words when people asked about Portugal hosting Formula 1 again. He said:

Portugal is an excellent location and already hosts other championships, such as rally raids. However, Formula 1 has a restricted number of slots available.

However, he pointed out that there are only a few slots available each season and they are already full. The current Formula 1 calendar is the busiest it has ever been.

There are over 20 races across five continents. The sport is growing and reaching new markets. Formula 1 has expanded to regions from the Middle East to Asia and the United States that offer big financial backing and new fans.

Ben Sulayem said:

At the World Council, we focus on regulations and the commercial side. I try to strike a balance between the sports side and commercial interests. While Formula 1 should never abandon Europe, where it originated and remains a hub of innovation, the sport also needs to explore new regions.

Formula 1 faces a tough challenge. It needs to balance its traditional roots with its global expansion. European countries have always been at the heart of the sport. Tracks like Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps are legendary. But commercial pressures push Formula 1 to expand to new places.

New races in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Miami show how Formula 1 is looking beyond its traditional homes. These locations bring huge investments and sponsorship deals. This helps the sport grow but it also means some traditional races are left out.

For Portugal this is a tough situation. The country is not only competing with other European nations but also with wealthier new markets. Portugal is a great destination with a strong motorsport culture but it struggles to match the financial offers of other countries.

Portimão Track

The Algarve International Circuit is one of Europe best tracks which is located near Portimão. It has a unique layout with fast corners and and long straights. Drivers and fans love it. Formula 1 races were exciting and when it came to Portimão in 2020 and the Algarve beauty made it even better.

Portimão also hosts other big motorsport events. MotoGP and World Superbike (WorldSBK) are regulars at the track. These events show that Portimão is a top venue. They also bring many visitors to the Algarve which boost the local economy.

The Economic Impact

Portugal economy would greatly benefit from hosting a Formula 1 event. The Algarve is already popular for its beaches and resorts. A Formula 1 race would bring even more visitors. Hotels and local businesses would see higher profits. The global exposure would also enhance Portugal’s reputation as a top destination.

Tourism and hotel leaders in the Algarve are eager to bring Formula 1 back. They argue that the benefits outweigh the costs. The Portuguese motorsports federation is also working hard to make this happen. They are promoting the country as an ideal place for Formula 1.

Challenges For Portugal

There are big challenges because hosting a Formula 1 race is expensive. It requires major investments in infrastructure, licensing fees, and other costs. Wealthy countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar set a high bar with their financial offers.

Another problem is the competition for spots on the calendar. Iconic tracks are fighting to keep their place. New markets are joining the race every year. Portugal has to prove it deserves a spot and offer attractive financial incentives.

Portugal’s chances look slim now but there is hope. Ben Sulayem comments show that Portugal is still valued. He said:

Portugal is an excellent location

Portugal can aim to be a backup venue. Portimão stepped in when other venues could not host races during the Covid-19 pandemic. It proved that it could organize top level events on short notice. Staying ready and reliable might open doors in the future.

Portugal can also continue investing in the Algarve International Circuit and its infrastructure. Portugal loves motorsport and the Algarve International Circuit is a fantastic venue. But the crowded Formula 1 calendar and tough competition make it hard for Portugal to secure a spot.

For now fans can enjoy other big events like MotoGP and WorldSBK. The dream of hosting Formula 1 is not over. Portugal might one day see Formula 1 return to its track With hard work and the right strategy.
