National Institute of Statistics has revealed that Portugal has reached its highest population since 2015. This is due to the positive migration in the country. The number of immigrants within the country has increased Portugal immigrants increase by 95% in 2 years.
Highest Population Since 2015
Data showing statistics for 2023 reveals that Portugal’s population has increased to a whopping 10.64 million people. This increase is a result of a 1.16% growth in immigration within the country. According to statistics, permanent immigration increased to 13.3% as compared to 2022. It makes up a total of 189,367 people. This number is more than 95% of that recorded in the year 2021. In 2015, the permanent immigrants were recorded to be 36,849 people in the country.

Since 2015, Portugal started to move towards the recovery plan after the financial assistance program. Immigration increased to a soaring high of 513% as Portugal opened its door to everyone who wanted to have a better life. The permanent emigration was reduced gradually from 2015 all the way to 2021. This increased a little from 2022 to 2023, marking the total number to 33,666 people.
Portugal experienced a positive migration balance due to these statistics. These numbers were consistent for the seventh consecutive year increasing from 136,144 people to 155,701 people in the year 2023. According to the age statistics, the data shows an increase in interval show from 2015 to 2023. There is a clear spike in an increase in the aging of the Portuguese population. These stats reveal an average age of 45.4 years old for men and 48.6 years old for women.
Mortality Rate Dropped
The statistic for mortality shows that the numbers have decreased since the pandemic. A high number was recorded during the first and second years of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 118,295 deaths were recorded between 2015 and 2019. This number has decreased by 4.9% since 2022. The maximum number of mortalities was recorded in 2018 when the number hit as high as 113,051.
Portugal witnessed a drop in the infant mortality rate which decreased by 2.5% during other years. The figure was recorded lower only during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) shows that the number of marriages was record high in the last year. If you combine the marriage data during the years 2015-2023, that will still be lower than the last year alone. The average age of those people who are engaged in their first marriage also reached the highest number. This average age is 35.8 years for men and 34.3 years for women.
