A lot of effort is required to achieve this growth in the tourism industry. There will be a lot of challenges and risks involved in reaching the goal. Pedro believes that the labor force should be qualified enough for the kind of work that the Government plans to boost tourism. International tourists mean that Portugal should provide facilities that are of the best quality.
2035 Tourism Strategy
A conference for 2035 tourism strategy was held and representatives from various countries attended it. The Portuguese Secretary of State, Pedro Machado also attended this meeting. He informed the press that the conference was a success. He listened to some perspectives and plans from other countries which helped him to make new plans for Portugal. The 2035 Tourism Strategy is being formulated with the aid of both public and private organizations from the tourism industry all over the world.
The President of the central region’s tourism authority, Raul Almeida had a more say in the conference. He was quite vocal and shared his opinions about the improvements in the tourism industry. He called for a more equal distribution of tourists from areas like Lisbon and Porto. Both these cities have the busiest airports in the country. Most of the people are tourists who come to visit the country.
Raul further stated that many people who come to Portugal as part of tourism, are found in the center of Portugal. Many other regions in the country can promote tourism. The only drawback is the lack of airports in some of the other areas. The government should distribute the flow of people to other regions by building airports in some of the other cities in Portugal. The President of the central region’s tourism authority stated:
We are the only region without an airport and these flows need to be distributed throughout the whole region.
Tourism Promotion Through Rail & Road
Tourists around the world choose Portugal as one of their dream destinations for holidays. However, Portugal can further increase their revenue in the tourism industry by making some changes. One such measure can be to improve accessibility within the country through both rail and road. Raul Almeida believes that there is a lack of motorway connection between the cities of Coimbra and Viseu.
Portugal needs to build road and rail connections between cities to promote tourism in some of the remote cities as well. Ribau Esteves, mayor of Aveiro hosted the conference. He believes that development in the road and rail sector will boost the tourism industry within the country. He stated:
[Development of Tourism in his municipality is] a unique destination due to its culture and territorial conditions.
Ribau believes that the bid for the Portuguese Capital of Culture will also promote tourism in his region. This can serve as a key marketing strategy to bring more international tourists to Portugal. He further said that the main factors of attraction are democratic values, identity, technology, and sustainability.
