The local authorities of Portugal have caught an estimated 700 drivers while using their phones. This should be a concern for many citizens who need to prioritize safety first. The authorities have fined a total of 24,500 speeding tickets to people along with 24500 speeding tickets.
700 Drivers Caught While Using Phone
Using a phone while driving is a strict violation of the safety code. It can put oneself in danger along with other people who are traveling on the road. The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) has released a press conference along with the National Republican Guard (GNR) and Public Security Police (PSP). This press conference has provided an update about the traffic violations in the region.

According to the press release, there have been 687 incidents where people were caught driving while using their phones. These incidents were recorded for the period of 15 October to 21 October. This is an alarming situation for the country and citizens need to be warned about these violations. 687 people out of the 675 were caught on the mainland of the area. The other 12 people were caught using mobile phones while driving on the islands of Madeira and Azores.
Survey Carried Out For Traffic Violations
A combined survey was carried out by three entities which are the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) has released a press conference along with the National Republican Guard (GNR) and Public Security Police (PSP). This campaign was run under the name, “At the wheel, the cell phone can wait”. This survey was considered a milestone in finding out the speeding violations. A total of 4.7 million vehicles were inspected during this survey. The speed of these vehicles was noted and some of them were fined if they exceeded the speed limit.
Out of 4.7 million vehicles, 24,500 vehicles were fined for speeding violations. The local authorities believe that it is vital to fine those vehicles who even exceed the speed limit barely. The authorities of Portugal also inspected around 56,600 vehicles in person. The security forces gave a brief lecture to 621 drivers along with passengers about the safety of roads. They also informed the drivers about the negative impact of consequences if they use their phones while driving. It can lead to fatal accidents and cause lives as well.
2011 Traffic Related Accidents Occurred
Authorities have established that 2,011 accidents resulted in 6 deaths, and 38 serious injuries, and 611 people sustained minor injuries. GNR representative, Lígia dos Santos has established that these accidents involved using a phone while driving but were not the sole cause of accidents. The number of accidents this year is much less than that of last year.
There is a significant decrease in accidents and injuries compared to the year 2023. There were a total of 1135 fewer incidents compared to last year. This year 12 fewer serious injuries occurred, and 333 fewer minor injuries happened. 6 serious fatal accidents occurred last week. It involved the death of 5 men and 1 woman. Two of these serious accidents occurred in the district of Setúbal. Moreover, 1 of these fatal accidents occurred in the districts of Guarda, Branco, Castelo, Santarém, and Lisbon.
