Pedro Nuno Santos who is the leader of the Socialist Party (PS) surprised everyone on Thursday evening by making an unexpected announcement about the 2025 State Budget. People were only expecting to hear from him on Monday but this announcement came earlier than planned. The reason for this seems to be growing divisions within the PS party about how to vote on the budget.

Santos explained why he believes it is usually normal for opposition parties to vote against a budget. But this time, he thinks it would be better for the PS to abstain. He argued that since the government is still new and the country has already had two elections in a short period so another election would not solve much.

He suggested that a third election in less than three years will probably not lead to major changes in the parliament’s makeup. Santos wants his party to abstain from voting on the budget to avoid another round of elections.

However, political commentators have criticized the timing of this announcement. Many feel that he should have said this months ago.

Pedro Nuno Santos’ announcement has led to many questions. Christina Figueiredo who is a political editor for SIC asked the question on everyone’s mind that why did not he say all this seven months ago.

Figueiredo explained that Santos could have laid out these reasons at the start of the legislative term. If he had done this then the country might have not seen the political drama that unfolded during the budget discussions.

She said:

All the reasons he took 10 minutes to explain could have been explained right at the start of the legislature

According to her, Santos’ delay in making his party’s position clear has only made things worse. The political tension around the budget has grown and now the PS faces a difficult situation.

Internal PS Divisions After Pedro’s Announcement

The PS is struggling with internal divisions. Some members want to vote against the budget and some want to follow Santos’ suggestion to abstain. This disagreement has created tension within the party and made it hard to move forward with one united stance.

Santos hopes to avoid new elections by pushing for abstention. He believes the government should be allowed more time to work and given its recent formation. He also admitted that an abstention will still highlight the government’s isolation in parliament.

Santos’ decision seems to maintain stability in the country but people criticize that his delay in taking a stand has caused unnecessary confusion.

Pedro Nuno Santos is also facing criticism that his leadership is weakening. His proposal for an abstention is now public. Some political analysts said that this is a sign of insecurity, not strength for Pedro.

Political commentators Ângela Silva and José Gomes Ferreira both believe Santos is coming across as erratic, insecure, and indecisive. Silva suggested that the timing and content of Santos’ announcement show he may be losing control.

She said that he looks isolated hinting that Santos is struggling to lead his party effectively. If this perception grows it will hurt his leadership in the long run, especially if the party continues to face internal conflict.

Other commentators believe that although Santos’ decision came late, at least he is now trying to fix the situation. The PS still has time to come together and resolve their differences, but it will not be easy.

Monday’s Meeting Will Be Crucial For 2025 State Budget

Santos finished his announcement by stating that he will present his position to the PS political commission on Monday. This meeting will be key in deciding the party’s final stance on the 2025 State Budget.

If the meeting does not bring the party closer together, the political drama can continue. The public may hear more announcements from Santos in the coming days, as the situation unfolds.

How the PS resolves this internal conflict will play a big role in shaping the future of the party and the country. The country remains uncertain about what will happen next for now.

The debate over the budget is about more than just finances. It highlights the larger problems facing Portugal’s political system. The country has already gone through two elections in a short period and the government is struggling to move forward.
