22% Drivers Escape From The Scene After Hit And Run In Portugal

The PSP police in Portugal state that around 22% of drivers escape from the scene after a hit-and-run incident. There is a total of 38,554 accidents recorded with injuries in the first half year. These accidents have been recorded between January 1 and August 31.

Around 22% People Tend To Escape After Hit And Run

There are around 8,427 people who have escaped from the hit-and-run sheet. This value makes 22% of the total number where drivers who have fled the scene. The PSP has recorded a total of 151,647 accidents since the year 2022. This led to the deaths of 193 people from these hit-and-run incidents. There are around 2005 serious injuries and 45,997 people who have suffered with light injuries.

The police force of Portugal has arrested 33,137 people who are accused of ‘crime on the road’. This value makes around 34 people per day and one person for every hour. The deaths that have been recorded this year rise to 55 with 11,845 people who suffered light injuries. Stats from the Government have shown around 8,204 accidents between vehicles. Some of these accidents involve deaths and injuries as well.

Most of the guilty people tend to run before the police arrive. One such incident occurred where a person was killed by a hit-and-run scenario. The guilty driver escaped the scene before the arrival of the police. This is mostly done to avoid taking a breathalyzer test. Some drivers drive without a valid driving license, so they escape the scene before the police catch them.

Rise In Cases Of Run Over By Vehicle

It is recorded by the Polícia de Segurança Pública, PSP police of Portugal that around 223 people have been run over in the first half of this year. The guilty drivers did not stop to provide any support or assistance to even one of these people. This accounts for one hit-and-run incident per day. Data from last year is not much better than this one. Out of the 57,633 accidents that occurred in 2023 and resulted in casualties, 12,191 saw at least one person involved flee. 337 people from this number have been reported to be run over by reckless drivers.

Out of the 55,460 incidents that occurred in the year 2022, 11,464 resulted in one of the drivers leaving the scene. This accounts for an average of 20% of the total number. The number of accidents that occurred involving a vehicle that came off the road is 18,991. This number accounts for the first half of the year. PSP has stated that around 18,991 were involved in collisions with other vehicles or objects. 9,058 out of this total number were involved in running over people. PSP has cleared stated:

The PSP appeals for safety to adapt their driving to the meteorological conditions and condition of the road. [Drivers should] adopt behaviors that could reduce their capacities, like driving under the effect of alcohol, driving with excessive speed, or under the effect of psychotropic substances.

It is advised by the PSP police not to use phones while driving. The focus of the driver should be solely on the road. PSP has also stated:

Special attention should be taken close to pedestrian crossings and areas with large fluxes of people, like schools.
